Caregiver’s Guide for Self-Protection

The caregiver’s job is something that needs expertise and wisdom from experience. This job must be done with utmost sincerity and a careful knowledge application. In this job, we have to manage our lifestyle, duties and work properly. We must take good care of our own personal health and even ask for a professional medical assistance regularly if possible.

Some of us don’t even categorize ourselves as caregivers. We may not even aware of it but we’re already doing the caregiving jobs. If you do the following things, then we can say that you are a caregiver:

  • Share responsibility for someone’s health, well-being and safety
  • Help someone in his or her daily activities like bathing, feeding
  • Look after someone who isn’t able take care of himself or herself

As someone who takes care of another well-being, you must also observe your health and behavior. If you noticed the following signs to yourself, we can say that these are signs of caregiving stress and may cause burn-out:

Headaches
Lack of sleep
Irritation and quick anger
Constant fatigue
Depression
Frustration
Sudden weight loss or gain

If you are experiencing these signs, you better take rest and frequent breaks on your tasks as caregiver. You may just be feeling exhausted and you need recharge. You can go out and talk to your friends for a while or give attention to your personal life. Focus on your achievements as a caregiver and not on your imperfections. You can also ask the people concerned to help so you can have a little time for yourself.
